Born the 1st of July. It looks a trailer for a new movie – it’s the story of the latest Italian wine D.o.c.g. (Denominazione d’Origine Controllata e Garantita).
Despite Barbera is a very popular grape in Piemonte, the Nizza Docg (made 100% with Barbera grape) expresses what “terroir” is: uniqueness of soil, microclimate and human heritage. Goes back to last June 2015 my interview with Giovanni Chiarle (oenologist at Cantina di Nizza) for the quarterly magazine BAROLO & CO.
We talked about the history of the wine Nizza Docg. In his interview Mr Chiarle said that the process to finalize rules of the new Docg started 20 years ago.
At that time the “patriarchs” of the Oenology (like Chiarlo, Mussa, Noè, and Prete) were selling separately wines coming from these towns. Only it was not written and certified! Many words should could be used to describe the difference between a Barbera wine and a Nizza Docg. Giovanni Chiarle focused its comment on the elegance.
He said: “the elegance is the best word to describe wines produced by grapes harvested in the more vocated hills”.
